about

The San Francisco Audubon Society, while trying to find new ways to record birdsong, came up with a radical conclusion. It needed to capture the sound of the absence of birdsong. It became a dialectic construct: birdsong and birdsilence. Birds are such a part of San Francisco that it was difficult to envision spaces that would be absent of them. But such spaces were found on public transportation, parking garages, ticket counters, streets at night and shopping centers. The recordings presented here sound like the earth when there are no birds, or just a few birds in the surrounding area of the recording.
